yes they can breed together. first thing would be to get rid of everything else other then the 2 fish. or simply put them in another tank to pair up. if your firemouth is male, remove all other female firemouths. or visversa if other way around. as for the convict, do the same. if its female remove all convict males from tank.
if given the opportunity fish prefer to breed with their own species. as about any other animal on the planet.
but with cichlids, given avail on a mate, a cichlid will breed with anything avail, pretty much. especially convicts and firemouths.
