I use a python to clean my sand. I take the big section off and just use the hose. Hold it about 1/4" to 1/2" off of the sand and it should just suck up all the poo. If you start sucking sand then just raise it up alittle. Also some people recommend that you stir up the sand when finished so no toxic gasses build up.
Hope this helps.

i've heard of ppl using a net to skim off the poop or w/e wile they are doing a W/C as usual. i have 2 tanks with sand/gravel mix for substrate. also some grades of sand is large enough to not be sucked up in the tube all the way. pool filter sand is large enough, and also multipurpose sand from home depot. play sand however is like dust, and gets sucked up easy.

I have the pavers sand from Lowes. It has many different sizes so after a good wash all that is left is the heavier stuff that stays in place.
